Review - Demi Lovato - Here We Go Again

Demil Lovato - If you don't know who she is then you don't have a daughter between the ages of 5 and 12. I know who she is. And frankly, I'm glad that I do. I was first introduced to her by way of "Camp Rock", which was, for its part, not a bad movie. Much better in fact than any of the HSM series. The music had much more of a rock edge than it's Disney pop counterpart and Demi songs were almost inspired. At the time however, I thought that her voice could use some maturing. That has apparently happened.

I have not heard her first CD, "Don't Forget" but I've heard that it was much more 'fun' than this one. I don't know about fun, but I know about good and this is definitely the latter. And I am a 38 year old web programmer that has a penchant for heavy, prog-rock. But I have an eclectic taste in music and if you can give me a well written and sung melody with a catchy rhythm section then you have thte makings of what I want in music.

This has both of those. The album is well paced and varied. Demi's voice changes timbre depending on the tone of the song. It can be both bright and airy or dark and intense. And this was the biggest surprise for me. I wasn't expecting such a matured vocal style. I am really impressed with what she does in places. She has a very artistic and mature approach to her craft and it will be interesting to see where she goes in the future.

Here We Go Again - Really catchy, hooky song that will stick in you head all day long. "Here we go, go again"
Solo - Another catchy rocking tune - "To bad you couldn't stay on key"
U Got Nothin' On Me - Rock pop -
Falling Over Me - Ballad - her voice on this is just beautiful. when she sings "you are the one" and holds the 'n' as opposed to the 'o' in 'one' it is just really nice.

Quiet - Evanessence-esque rocker
Catch Me -
Every Time You Lie -
Got Dynamite - another rocker
Stop The World - Ballad popper
World Of Chances - cowritten with John Mayer
Remember December - rocker
Everything You're Not - rocker
Gift Of A Friend - Ballad friend song... Irish Waltz style. I assume this if for Selena.
So Far So Great - Theme song for her show

My Beginning With jQuery

I recently taught a class in JavaScript, and while I still don't consider myself an expert in the subject, I now feel fairly proficient in it.  Be in an effort to furthe my knowledge of JS, I stumbled across jQuery.   jQuery is a JavaScript framework that enables a developer to get more done in shorter amount of time.

So I've been looking for good examples of jQuery in use, becuase it is always easiest to learn a new language by seeing practical applications of it.

Here is the first that I've found.

Children and Music

I'm thinking about creating a music game for children using my recording equipment.  I'm not sure now how to structure the game, but the idea would be to have simple singing exercises pre-recorded to which they would sing over top on another track.  This would allow them to hear themselves to a greater degree than a voice student typically gets to hear.  And if you've ever heard struggling singers, or have been one yourself, you can appreciate the value of being able to hear oneself.  A person can be told that he/she is singing off pitch, but until he/she can hear for him/herself it won't make much of an impact.

So to that end I'm researching the vocal ranges of different ages of children.

I found this website that has a 10 point checklist for writing music for children that says the music should be from middle C to the G above for young children, and that can be extended by a few notes each way as they enter into the lower grades.

But I plan to post those activities here, for anyone to use as they wish.  So keep checking back!

This is the digital piano that I would love to have. I'm trying to figure out how I can get this. Mom? Dad? If you ever wanted to drop a lot of money on me, this is what I would like to see.
